Picnic time is just around the corner for Northland Community Council members.

As has become a tradition, this year's August gathering for the NCC will be the annual combined summer picnic and meeting.

It will be held, Tuesday, Aug. 10, in the Sycamore Shelter House at Blendon Woods Metro Park. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. with a short meeting to follow.

"Please remember that this does count toward your attendance commitments," NCC secretary Roseann Hicks wrote in an e-mail reminder of the event. "If you are unsure about your attendance status, please feel free to call me or send me an e-mail."

Member organizations that go for protracted periods without having a representative at one of the council's monthly meetings face expulsion under the bylaws.

Hicks, in her e-mail, pointed out that the picnic is by no means a closed affair, although a good deal of cooking is requested.

"This event is also open to anyone in your association and their families, but please plan to bring a side dish or dessert large enough to share with about 50 people," she said.

The council will take care of the hot dogs and hamburgers as well as drinks and tableware.

In order to get the right mix of items to complement what the council provides, Hicks in her e-mail asked members of neighborhood organizations that begin with the letters A-F to bring a dessert. Organizations that begin with the letters G-Z should bring a side dish.

"There is plenty of room for yard games if you would like to bring those as well," she added.

Finally, Hicks wrote that volunteers are needed to pick up and ice down the drinks along with two people to help set up and direct incoming dishes.
