Voters soon will decide what the new park adjacent to Orange Township's bike and pedestrian bridge will be called.

Township officials earlier this month posted a poll online to allow residents to choose one of three names for the 1-acre park east of the bridge over U.S. Route 23, near the Orange branch of the Delaware County District Library. Residents can access the poll online at surveymonkey.com/r/5FFGWHD until 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29.

Residents in June submitted more than 250 potential park names, which the township's trustees whittled down to three finalists:

* 23 Junction

* Mud Pike

* Orange Bridge Park.

Trustee Debbie Taranto said two of the names explain themselves, but the third requires a brief history lesson. She said "Mud Pike" was a nickname travelers in the 1800s gave the poorly maintained road between Delaware and Worthington before it saw improvements and became U.S. Route 23.

Township officials will announce the park's name during a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the fall.

Beth Hugh, the township's maintenance and parks director, said the park is "pretty much completed" except for some landscaping work and other finishing touches.

Hugh said work on the park should be complete by the end of September. She said the ceremony likely would be scheduled for October.

The park will feature bike racks, drinking fountains, picnic tables and a shelter. The township used about $186,000 in park-levy funding to pay for work at the site.

Hugh said township officials see the park as a resting point for residents and visitors who use the township's trail system.

Taranto said township officials plan to combine the ribbon-cutting ceremony with a celebration of the township's bicentennial. She said local and state officials, as well as families who have lived in the township for generations, will be the guests of honor at the celebration of the township's 200-year history.
