Freshman Stu Brdicka and senior Kevin Miller of the Olentangy High School boys tennis team qualified for the Division I state tournament for the first time and will compete in doubles Friday, May 29, and Saturday, May 30, at Ohio State.

Brdicka and Miller went 2-2 and placed fourth in the district tournament held May 22 at Hilliard Davidson and May 23 at Upper Arlington. The top four finishers in singles and doubles advanced to state.

They opened with a 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 victory over St. Charles' Vinh Thai and Jack Dabek before beating Orange seniors Kaleb Kok and Stephen Spezzano 6-1, 6-0 in a state-qualifying match.

"I couldn't be prouder of Kevin and Stu for qualifying for state out of a very strong field," coach Jeff Luxenburger said. "Our first-round match was against St. Charles, a team we knew came out of a very strong sectional and had proven themselves throughout the season. We got down early in the second and third sets after winning the first, and it was probably the most nerve-racking match I have ever coached. To come back ... to win 7-5 in the third-set tiebreak was absolutely a season highlight for Kevin and Stu, if not a program highlight for all of us watching."

Brdicka and Miller lost to New Albany's Nick Blair and Graeme Green 6-1, 6-3 in a semifinal before falling to Upper Arlington's Jack Hughes and Tyler Holsopple 6-1, 6-2 in the consolation final.

"We finished in fourth, but we absolutely held our own against top-tier teams from New Albany and UA," Luxenburger said.

In singles, senior Arun Esakkirajmohan opened with a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Hilliard Bradley's Mitchell Thai.

"Arun played very strongly and was up a break in the first set," Luxenburger said. "I couldn't ask for more from him during his senior season. To play like that and qualify for district as a third-singles player is truly outstanding."

Both of Orange's doubles teams went 1-1 to fall a win short of qualifying for state.

Freshman Jordan Phelps and sophomore Jonathan Zhuravel opened with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Dublin Jerome's Michael Lin and Jason Liu before losing to Hughes and Holsopple 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Kok and Spezzano opened with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win over Gahanna's Eric Chen and Chris Kusovski before losing to Brdicka and Miller.

For Liberty, sophomore Hoang Do opened with a 6-1, 6-1 loss to UA's Jack Zelezny.
