It was a matter of life and death and with precious few seconds in which to act, two of Pickerington's finest worked together as a team to save the life of a local infant.

December 28, just three days after Christmas, 13-day-old Lexi Leiter of Pickerington was struggling to breathe because of a respiratory complication.

Safety officials were alerted via a 911 call. Pickerington Police Officers Nick Baehr and Kyle Smith were dispatched to the Leasure Drive address and were first to arrive.

They found an unresponsive infant who wasn't breathing.

But both kept their cool and calmly worked together to administer cardio-pulmonary resuscitation to young Lexi.

According to the police report, the officers were able to help Lexi begin breathing on her own. Lexi was transported to Nationwide Children's Hospital by Violet Township paramedics and is making a full recovery, safety officials said.

Baehr and Smith both received commendations from the city of Pickerington and from the Pickerington Police Department at the Jan. 5 City Council meeting.

Mayor Lee Gray awarded a commendation from the city for the officers resolute and dedicated work in the community.

Pickerington Police Chief Mike Taylor presented the officers with the "Citation of Merit Award," which Taylor stated is the highest award the Police Chief can bestow on an officer.

Mayor Gray said he was proud of the officers.

"We have an exceptional police department and it comes down to two things -- the people and training," he said.

"It is in situations like this where you know the training comes through and it's a worthwhile investment," Gray said.

He also commended Taylor for having his officers prepared for any situation, any time.

"Chief Taylor is a big believer in training, whether it be CPR or anything else an officer needs in the field," Gray said.

"This time it really paid off."
