LANCASTER -- Kyle Chontos, Colt Turley and Tony Winters had run-scoring hits in a five-run seventh inning as the Pickerington Post 283 baseball team defeated Worthington Post 239 9-2 in the second round of winners' bracket play in the American Legion state tournament Monday evening at Lancaster High School.

Pickerington improved to 38-3 and advanced to a winners' bracket semifinal Tuesday afternoon against Napoleon Post 300.

Worthington dropped to 26-10 but rebounded to beat Beverly/Lowell Posts 389/750 10-2 on Tuesday.

Post 283, which had a first-round bye, batted around in the seventh inning to break a 2-all tie and added two runs in the ninth.

Pickerington started strong, opening the game with consecutive doubles by Isac Franklin and Joe Matalon for a 1-0 lead. Worthington took a 2-1 lead in the fourth as Dan Eurich hit a two-out, two-run double, but Post 239 managed just four hits off Pickerington starter Rob Sexton and reliever Zach Beaver.

Turley's RBI single tied the game in the fifth inning, before a two-and-a-half hour rain delay. Beaver relieved Sexton after the rain delay.

Chontos broke the tie with an RBI single in the seventh and Turley followed with a triple to right-center field. After Worthington starter Alio Gasbarro hit Matt Connor with a pitch, Scott Pancoast squeezed home a run and was safe on a fielder's choice. Winters added an RBI single and Pancoast stole home on the back end of a double steal.

In the ninth, Connor doubled off reliever Andy Bean and scored on Pancoast's triple. Winters then had an RBI groundout.

Worthington defeated Coshocton Post 65 10-9 in the first round Monday when Eurich hit a two-run home run to cap a five-run ninth. Post 239 trailed 7-0 entering the seventh but scored five in both the eighth and ninth.

Adkins leads Post 239 win

Blake Adkins scattered six hits in Post 239's victory over Beverly/Lowell Posts 389/750 at Beavers Field.

Playing its first elimination game in the 12-team tournament, Worthington scored all the runs it needed in the bottom of the first. Sam Adams' RBI double highlighted the three-run inning.

Adams also singled, hit a solo home run and walked. He had three RBI.

Will Meador doubled and singled, David Lykens drove in two runs and Eurich hit a solo home run.

Beverly/Lowell trailed 9-0 before scoring both of its runs in the eighth inning on a walk, double and single off Adkins, who was dominant despite throwing 140-plus pitches in the rising heat.

Beverly/Lowell, which finished 22-15, aided Worthington's cause by making five errors. Post 239 totaled 14 hits, but stranded 12 runners.

Worthington, which won state titles in 1975 and 1981, advanced to play either Utica Post 92 or Lima Post 96 later Tuesday.
