The Reynoldsburg High School boys soccer team defeated Olentangy 2-1 (6-5 in penalty kicks) in a Division I district final on Saturday, Oct. 29, at Wellington to win its first district championship.

The Raiders improved to 9-7-3 and advanced to play Dublin Scioto or Dublin Coffman in a regional semifinal Tuesday, Nov. 1, at Coffman. The regional final will be played Nov. 5 at Scioto.

Olentangy finished 8-10-2.

Olentangy sophomore Logan Schwing and Reynoldsburg senior Trevor Flowers each scored in the first half and the score remained tied at 1 for the rest of regulation and two 15-minute overtime periods, sending the game to penalty kicks.

Scoring the decisive goal for the Raiders in the penalty kicks was freshman Cameron Raglin.

"This was a huge emotional win to come out on top in penalty kicks," Reynoldsburg coach Justin Lewis said. "It will carry over into the regional semis next week. We've been spending at least 30 minutes on penalty kicks in practice every day. It's nice to know that it paid off and the kids weren't out there messing around."

With less than four seconds to go in regulation, it appeared that Olentangy sophomore Jon Bechtol had provided the winning goal, but he was ruled offside. Before the ruling was made clear, however, Bechtol had removed his jersey. He was given a red card and ejected from the game.

"We scored the goal with 3.5 seconds left and it got ruled out for a player being offside," Olentangy coach Dave Sebek said. "In his excitement, he removed his shirt and was given a red card. We went into overtime with 10 (players) and we played well. I think we generated the majority of opportunities in overtime and we took it to penalty kicks. We've had success with (penalty kicks) with our last win at New Albany. I think that we were the better team today, but once you get into penalty kicks, it's a lottery."

Olentangy defeated New Albany 2-1 (6-5 in penalty kicks) in the second round of the district tournament Oct. 22.
