FAIRBORN - As has been the case throughout the postseason, the Ready High School softball team used a big inning to beat Brookville 14-3 in five innings in a Division III regional semifinal May 29 at Wright State.

The Silver Knights, who scored eight times in the third inning of a 15-2 win over Liberty Union in a district semifinal May 20 and five runs in the third of an 8-2 win over North Union in a district final May 25, scored eight in the second against Brookville.

Ready improved to 14-15 and will play Casstown Miami East or Batavia Clermont Northeastern in a regional final at noon June 1 at Wright State. Miami East plays Clermont Northeastern on May 30 at Wright State.

"That's how we play softball," junior center fielder Haylee Patel said. "We don't like to be down and when we let them score two runs (in the bottom of the first), we had to go at it again."

Ready took a 2-0 lead in the first. Patel led off with a single, second baseman Sammy Hawkins singled to deep center, third baseman Courtney Hackney singled in Patel and left fielder Hailey Bryan grounded out to score Hackney.

Brookville used a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch to tie it at 2 in the bottom of the first.

In the second for Ready, a double by junior pitcher Julia Hall scored shortstop Madison Gatley and right fielder Molli Abbruzzese, Hawkins had an RBI hit and Bryan had an RBI triple. Gatley also had a single and scored on a three-base error during her second at-bat of the inning as Ready sent 11 to the plate.

Ready scored its final four runs in the fifth, as Patel and Hackney had RBI singles and Hawkins added a two-run double.

Brookville, which had no seniors in its lineup and finished 20-7, got just three hits and struck out nine times against Hall.
