Quoran Knights scooped up a fumble and returned it 18 yards for the game's only touchdown early in the fourth quarter and the Walnut Ridge High School football team defeated host Watterson 8-3 in a turnover-marred non-league opener Aug. 26 at Hagely Field.

Watterson quarterback Cole Andrews mishandled the exchange deep, putting the ball on the ground. Knights, a senior linebacker, grabbed the ball and took it to the end zone.

The Scots converted the two-point conversion as Isaiah Murphy hit Justin Vance on a fade pass.

Watterson's points came on a 27-yard field goal by Kevin Laming with 7:30 left in the third quarter.

Walnut Ridge cashed in on five turnovers by Watterson, two coming on interceptions by Michael Ayers. The second one came on Watterson's last-ditch attempt to score. Walnut Ridge then took a knee and ran out of the clock.

The Scots made two turnovers.

Each team managed just nine first downs.

The Eagles had an opportunity to score first at the end of the first half, but time expired before they had time to line up for a short field-goal attempt.

Walnut Ridge got into the red zone twice but came up empty on fourth down.

The only big gain of any consequence came when Murphy passed to Darrick Forrest, who was on the ground, and the ball bounced off his hands to Knights, who gained 37 yards to the Watterson 15-yard line.

Walnut Ridge won the second game in a row in the four-year series. Neither team has scored more than 17 points during that span.
