Help a worthy cause...
This holiday season the Salvation Army will help thousands of families in need, providing food to hungry families through their pantries, coats to those who need them, housing for those without it, and gifts for families that cannot afford them.

I'd like to invite you to help the Salvation Army by donating two hours of your time. We'll be ringing the bell at the Kroger Marketplace on Sawmill Road near Hard on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Please help by signing up to ring for one two-hour shift. Invite your friends, family, business associates and other contacts to participate.

To volunteer: e-mail Stephen Zonars, GM at ThisWeek Community Newspapers, at szonars@ dispatch.com.

In total, the bells will ring for 20,000 person-hours in central Ohio. If Dec. 5 or the northwest location is not convenient, I encourage you to sign up at this link: http://www.salvationarmycolumbus.org/christmas/bellringing.html.

Help the UA Fire Department
America's firefighters are facing tough times. Perhaps you've seen reports of fire stations forced to cut staff, salaries, or forgo new life-saving equipment.

I'm writing to tell you that Upper Arlington residents can help reverse this trend with the click of a button.

Upper Arlington residents can help their local fire departments win $10,000 grants by visiting www.BeFireSmart.com/stacykusma and taking a brief quiz on home fire safety. Each completed quiz counts for one point towards that local fire department, and the 10 U.S. departments with the most community participation will earn $10,000 grants.

You can help our neighborhood heroes by rallying family, friends and colleagues to go online and participate in the Liberty Mutual BeFireSmart Fire Safety Pledge program.

The grant period will stay open until Dec. 21, and winning departments will be announced in January 2010.
