To the editor:

The flags have been folded, the marching bands are silent and the sparkle of fireworks is a summertime memory. As we approach this season of Thanksgiving, we would like to thank and recognize those who helped make the 2010 Upper Arlington July 4th Parade a success.

We thank the hundreds of parade participants: the marching bands, neighborhood float builders, military, police and fire representatives, antique car drivers, student athletes, scout troops, nonprofit groups, and all others that attend to celebrate our nation's independence.

A special thank you goes to Brutus Buckeye for leading the 2010 parade, to Dr. Jon Woods and his family for serving as Grand Marshal and to all the members of the OSU Alumni Band. Your participation made it a true "Buckeye 4th of July!"

Our special thanks to those who work for the city of Upper Arlington. We worked closely with both deputy city manager Emma Speight and Lt. Paul Schaumburg. Emma coordinated many meetings, kept notes and served as a liaison between our committee, the Kingsdale developers and the city staff. Due to the Kingsdale construction, Lieutenant Schaumburg spent extra time with our committee to develop a new plan for traffic and parade staging.

We also thank Chief Jeff Young, Capt. Ben Anders, Lt. Chris Zimmer and the others at the fire department who helped with the day's festivities. As always, Steve Cothrel and Dave Staats and the entire Parks and Recreation Department did a great job. Thank you to Buddy Caplinger and the streets division, as well as the electrical division and solid waste employees.

Funding for the Upper Arlington Civic Association July 4th Parade comes from generous member and corporate donations. Thanks to all who have paid their 2010 UACA membership dues.

Many products and services donated by businesses help make the day run smoothly. Thank you to: Rent-A-John Portable Sanitation, Starbuck's Coffee, Grassroots Irrigation, Blockbuster Video, Donato's Pizza, Cameron Mitchell Restaurants, Dewey's Pizza, Boston's the Gourmet Pizza, Brian McGuire Landscaping, Ed Crum and Griffin Pavement Striping, Macy's, the Ohio State University Golf Courses, Urban Express Charter and all the Kingsdale merchants.

In order for the parade to smoothly travel down Northwest Boulevard, many volunteers are directing, assisting and organizing the hundreds of parade participants. Many thanks to the past July 4th chairpersons: Mike and Melissa Fleming, Randy and Kathy Mueller, Brian and Dawn McGuire, and Bill and Robin Hall for making it all look so easy. Bill Hall - your help with developing our new staging plan was invaluable.

We also thank the Upper Arlington Civic Association's directors and junior directors for their assistance with the day's events. Thanks to our special volunteers: Boy Scout Troop 555, Josh Gille, Ron Johnson, Kyle Andrews, Joan Mast, Kevin and Sheryl Crowley, the Krum Family, the Mignery Family, Rodney and Lisa Gearhart, George and Janet Belu, Gene Warman and all our float judges for doing your part to make the day successful.

Thanks to all those that created a fabulous night of celebration at the annual Party in the Park. Shucking Bubba Deluxe and Wonk had everyone dancing and many thanks to Kelsey Overmeyer for her wonderful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.

Finally, we would like to thank our fellow committee members: Andy and Carolyn Weeks, Drew and Lissa Wade, and Mike and Lisa Berens for their commitment, organization, and special friendship. Our times together will never be forgotten. We wish you all much success as you plan future July 4th events. We have truly enjoyed being a part of this Upper Arlington tradition.

Thanks to all the men and women of our Armed Forces, both past and present, for keeping our Nation safe and independent. We look forward to celebrating our Nation's freedom again in 2011.
