Elli Wachtman, a three-year starting outfielder for the Golden Bears who also plays catcher, is expected to miss at least a month with a partially torn right hamstring.

According to coach Brandon Twiss, the injury dates to basketball season, during which Wachtman averaged 7.9 points, seven rebounds and 1.8 steals to help UA to its second Division I district championship in three years. She has not played softball since a 15-14 win over Olentangy Liberty on April 6.

"Getting out here in the cold, she re-aggravated it. We nursed her along, and then (against Liberty) she hit a ball on her way to first and pulled up," Twiss said. "She will do everything she can to come back. It makes me ill every time I think about it. She's a better person than she is a player. It's a tough thing to swallow. I was looking forward to her having a great senior year. I know she'll do everything she can to get back."

Wachtman has committed to play basketball at Capital University.

UA was 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the OCC-Central Division entering an April 13 home game against Marysville. The Bears, who were averaging 11.5 runs per game, were tied at 5 through nine innings against Central Crossing on April 12 before the game was suspended because of darkness.
