Sophomore Ali Scudds appears to be a solid building block for the Westland High School gymnastics team.

She is one of several gymnasts who has displayed improvement for the Cougars, who will compete in the South-Western Classic at Grove City on Feb. 12. A meet against Dublin Scioto, Central Crossing and Grandview Heights last Wednesday was postponed.

Scudds finished first on floor in meets against Big Walnut and Olentangy on Jan. 19 (8.55), Miami Trace on Jan. 15 (8.5) and Dublin Coffman and Dublin Jerome on Dec. 17 (8.05). She was first on beam (7.8) and second in the all-around (29.15) in a 115.2-109.75 loss to Miami Trace.

Scudds, who also participates in track and field, began competing in gymnastics as a freshman.

"Last year I was learning all the events and this year I really didn't have to spend time learning the events," said Scudds, who prefers floor. "I could just improve on them."

ēThe wrestling team will compete in the Watkins Memorial Invitational on Saturday. Last season, the Cougars finished seventh out of 15 teams at the event.

"It's a good tournament," coach Roger Branham said. "They bring in some very strong teams. It's a pool-style tournament where kids wrestle the maximum that they can wrestle, five times. It's a good challenge."

Westland, which competed in the OCC-Central Division tournament last Saturday, finished 11th (91) in the Mary E. Kerr Invitational at Toledo Waite on Jan. 23-24. Oregon Clay was first (205.5).

"We represented ourselves OK, but we were so close to having a very good tournament," Branham said.

Placers included Kyle Hazlett at 160 pounds (third), Sean Clutter at 130 (fifth), Keith Carius at 171 (sixth), Scottie Haslam at 112 (eighth) and Quintin Rigney at 135 (eighth). Clutter was a team-best 29-5 before last Saturday.

"As a coach of any team as you progress through the season, you hope to be improving and I feel like we are," Branham said.

ēThe girls basketball team, which faced Marion Franklin last Saturday, will play host to Thomas Worthington on Tuesday.

The Cougars were 1-13 overall and 0-8 in the OCC-Central before their game against Worthington Kilbourne last Friday.

Thomas defeated Westland 66-28 on Dec. 23. The Cardinals were 6-9 overall and 4-6 in the OCC before their game against Dublin Coffman last Friday.

Westland will play host to Upper Arlington on Friday and visit Jonathan Alder on Saturday.

The Golden Bears defeated the Cougars 71-26 on Jan. 6 and were 8-7 overall and 6-4 in the OCC before their game against Hilliard Darby last Friday.

Last season, Jonathan Alder beat Westland 59-51.

Westland fell to first-place Coffman 68-21 last Tuesday. Jasmine Junkins led the Cougars with seven points.

Coffman is second in the Division I state poll.
