George Kauffman said he finds it hard to believe Grove City hasn't had any other car dealerships over the past 40 years.

"I'm not complaining," the vice president of Byers Automotive Group said. "The Grove City support has been unreal."

Byers Chevrolet, now open at 5887 N. Meadows Drive, near the northeast corner of Interstate 71 and state Route 665, is the first car dealership in Grove City since the 1970s.

"The reception has been phenomenal," Kauffman said. "I can't think of a better place to be."

The Chevy dealership officially opened in March, relocating after about 30 years at its Broad Street location near downtown Columbus, Kauffman said. Changing demographics and markets led to the decision to leave Downtown, Kauffman said.

"Twenty years ago, everyone worked Downtown," he said. "Now, they're spread out all over town."

Meanwhile, the people still living Downtown aren't driving as much as they used to.

"You move to where people who buy your product are," Kauffman said.

The new location was selected for its visibility from I-71 as well as its proximity to the Route 665 interchange.

"The visibility is second to none," Kauffman said. "It's a beautiful, beautiful exit."

Currently, the dealership has about 90 employees and maintains about 250 new and 130 used vehicles in stock. Kauffman said he would like to get the stock up to 400.

"Sales continue to grow," Kauffman said.

In addition to new and used certified vehicles, the dealership also offers a full-service center.

"Anything you may need for Chevrolet, we got it here," Kauffman said. "Down the road, we may have to expand our services department."

Byers owns enough land on the site to construct two additional dealerships. Although there are no immediate plans to do so, Byers anticipates adding parking soon.

"Grove City is so much larger than people realize," Kauffman said. "If everything goes as well as it's been going, we'll build at least one (more dealership)."

Grove City is a growing community, Kauffman said, and Byers plans to grow with it.

"It is one of the fastest growing communities in the region," he said. "I'm planning on being here a hundred years."
