Ema Rennie, a seventh-grade student at Genoa Middle School, is a finalist in the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day competition.

Rennie, who submitted a paper about investigative journalist Gary Webb, will compete at the University of Maryland the week of June 14-18. This year's theme is "Leadership and Legacy in History."

Each year nearly 3,000 students from around the world gather with parents and teachers at the University of Maryland, College Park for the weeklong finals.

Rennie is taught by Caley Nestor-Baker and Media Specialist Deanna McDaniel.

McDaniel was named the 2015 Patricia Behring Teacher of Merit for the Ohio affiliate, which recognizes outstanding NHD educators. Two winners, one at the junior level (grades 6-8) and one at the senior level (grades 9-12), are selected from each NHD affiliate. The winners of the national awards will be selected from among the affiliate awardees.
