Westerville's Honor Flight organizers are hoping to give participating veterans a warm welcome when they return from their tour of Washington, D.C., Saturday, Sept. 19.

The program sends veterans on a free trip to the nation's capital to visit the war memorials dedicated to their service.

Along with friends and family members of the veterans, residents are invited to a special welcome home ceremony being organized to greet the current batch of veterans Saturday evening. They are asked to gather about 8:30 p.m. near the Southwest Airlines ticket area on the main level of Port Columbus International Airport.

The Ohio State University marching band will be performing for those coming home from the trip, which will include veterans from World War II and the Korean War.

Westerville has sponsored Honor Flights since 2009. Since then, Westerville For Honor Flight has sponsored nearly 500 veterans and raised more than $350,000. Sponsoring a veteran costs about $550 apiece.

The Honor Flight veterans on this Westerville-sponsored flight will be returning to Port Columbus on Southwest flight 8246, arriving at 9:15 p.m. Saturday.
