The top four finishers in singles and doubles will advance to state May 29 and 30 at Ohio State.

Mayotte, who is 18-6 overall, upset second-seeded Hoang Do of Olentangy Liberty 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 in the third-place match at sectional May 16 at Reynoldsburg.

That came after Mayotte, who was seeded fourth, lost to top-seeded and eventual champion Cameron Raglin of Reynoldsburg 6-1, 6-0 in a semifinal.

The top four finishers in singles and doubles at sectional advanced to district.

"Daniel fought hard and earned his spot to go to district, having played against three strong opponents," coach Rob Carlson said. "I am proud of his accomplishment and this is just the beginning of Daniel's successful tennis career at Westerville North."

Also at sectional, Sam Payne went 1-1 and Kyle Reiniger was 0-1 in singles. MgGlenn Etienne and Justin Evans were 1-1 in doubles, and Reese Nguyen and Vidit Singhal were 0-1.

South's Kotik falls short of goal

South's Jacob Kotik challenged for a district berth in the Reynoldsburg sectional but came up short.

Kotik won his first two matches, including a 7-5, 6-4 win over Payne in the second round before losing to Pickerington North's Cameron Friedman 6-4, 6-2 in a district-qualifying match.

Kotik, a sophomore, finished 17-6.

Also at sectional, going 0-1 were seniors Spencer Geho and Iyad Hmidat in singles and junior Dhillon Welsh and senior Mladen Babaleev in doubles.

The Wildcats, who finished 2-16 overall, went 0-7 in the OCC-Cardinal Division to place eighth behind Dublin Jerome (7-0), Dublin Scioto (5-2), Hilliard Bradley (5-2), Hilliard Darby (4-3), North (4-3), Westerville Central (2-5) and Canal Winchester (1-6).

South defeated Reynoldsburg 5-0 on April 28 and Thomas Worthington 3-2 on May 7.

Other players eligible to return are juniors Spencer Clark and Andrew Kelliher and freshman Nathan Drum.

"It was a good season," coach Ryan French said. "We had bad luck, but we won two matches. It's been fun. I hope to get some of these guys back playing in the fall and winter."

Central finishes with five wins

Central finished 5-11 overall and 2-5 in the OCC-Cardinal.

"As a coach, you always look back at opportunities that you didn't take advantage of," coach Brian Arnett said. "We lost a lot of close matches, but we did it with a lot of young kids. Hopefully we gained enough experience for next year and those turn into close wins."

Sophomore Mitchell McClain went 2-1 in the Pickerington Central sectional May 14, finishing a win short of qualifying for district.

McClain defeated Walnut Ridge's Josh Kelly 6-0, 6-0 and Watkins Memorial's Doug Holland 6-0, 6-2 before losing to Pickerington Central's Chase Pratt 6-1, 7-5.

Senior Andrew McKnight was 1-1 in singles.

Also at sectional, going 0-1 were sophomore Conor Davis in singles and senior Ana Borish and sophomore Max Ramsey and juniors Tanner Bush and Bobby Weiler in doubles.

Sophomore Jensen Ciehanski also is eligible to return.
