Whitehall City Council members are expected to select a new member at a special meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 29.

Eight residents applied for consideration to complete the term of Ward 2 Councilman Wes Kantor, whose term expires Dec. 31, 2017.

Council Clerk Carol Churchman identified the candidates as Linda Berridge, Chris Bolich, Richard Hoge, Treva Draper-Imler, Octavian "Tavi" Netotian, Kevin Skinner, Paul Sparks Jr. and Lee Stahley.

Kantor was elected in November to an at-large council seat.

Council members will interview candidates today and Thursday, Dec. 9-10, at Whitehall City Hall, 360 S. Yearling Road.

Council members will meet in a closed executive session both evenings to interview the slate of candidates, Council President Jim Graham said.

Graham previously said council members would not name an appointee until after Jan. 1, but after conferring with City Attorney Mike Shannon, Graham said Dec. 9 that council members would choose a new member at a special meeting Dec. 29.

The decision will allow Councilwoman Leslie LaCorte to participate in the selection.

LaCorte, who was unsuccessful in unseating incumbent Mayor Kim Maggard in last month's election and will lose her council seat Dec. 31, challenged Graham at the Dec. 8 meeting when it was unclear whether council could vote on the new member prior to the expiration of Kantor's term.
