The Whitehall Board of Education tonight (Dec. 10) unanimously approved a principal's request for a seven-month sabbatical.

The Whitehall school board met Thursday, Dec. 10, to unanimously approve a principal's request for a seven-month sabbatical.

Whitehall-Yearling High School Principal Carl Svagerko asked the school board to approve a sabbatical leave and his subsequent resignation.

The school board met at 6 p.m. Dec. 10 at Etna Road Elementary School, 4537 Etna Road, and approved the request.

Svagerko's sabbatical will begin Friday, Dec. 11, and continue through July 2016, at which time he would resign.

The request wasn't part of the original agenda but was added Dec. 10, said Blythe Wood, board vice president. Wood said she was unaware the request was coming and wouldn't comment further.

Board President Walter Armes called it "a personnel matter" and declined to discuss it further prior to the Dec. 10 board meeting.

Armes said he was aware of the principal's request before it was added to the agenda Dec. 10. He would not say when or how he was made aware of Svagerko's request.

According to a Dec. 11 press release, Svagerko is resigning his position effective at the end of the school year "to pursue other career options."

A team of district administrators will assume Svagerko's responsibilities at no additional cost to the district, according to the press release.

Calls to Svagerko and Superintendent Brian Hamler haven't been returned.
