A 64-unit senior community known as Hamilton Crossing is scheduled to open in October 2017 at South Hamilton and Etna roads.

Hamilton Crossing is the third initiative of Homeport in partnership with Whitehall and other entities to provide affordable housing options for senior citizens, said Steve Nichol, manager of public relations for Homeport.

In 2013, Homeport opened the 66-unit Eastway Village on East Broad Street in Whitehall, followed by its sister community of 32 apartment homes on Eastway Court.

Hamilton Crossing, an $11.4 million project to be built on the former site of Swimland, once a private pool, will have 64 one- and two-bedroom apartments.

Partners in the project include the city of Whitehall, Huntington Bank, Ohio Capital Corp., the Ohio Housing Finance Agency, the Affordable Housing Trust for Columbus and Franklin County, EMH&T, Berardi Partners, Ruscilli Construction Co. and Wallick Communities.

"The city is excited to continue its partnership with Homeport (and) increase its inventory of quality housing stock for senior citizens," Development Director Zach Woodruff said.

The development also will be a "catalyst for further development" along the South Hamilton Road corridor, Woodruff said, and provide the city with revenue needed to undertake a $3 million project to refurbish Etna Road from South Hamilton Road east to Country Club Road.

Revenue from tax-increment financing attached to the Homeport parcel will be used toward debt service for the improvement project.

The Etna Road improvement project will be a "dramatic new front door" for the city's senior center, John Bishop Park and Etna Road Elementary School, Woodruff said.
