A groundbreaking ceremony was set to be held Nov. 21 for the construction of a $1.2 million splash pad at John Bishop Park.

"This is a project that has long been anticipated," Whitehall Mayor Kim Maggard said. "We are thrilled to be able to start work."

Construction was postponed after higher-than-expected estimates required he city to rebid the project.

The water playground will be about 3,500 square feet, said Gail Martineau, community affairs coordinator for the city.

The splash pad will have a "Mediterranean ocean" theme, Maggard said.

Work is estimated to take about six months.

"We hope to have a grand opening Memorial Day weekend," Maggard said.
