Four Worthington firefighters were recently recognized for their professionalism and teamwork.

Battalion Chief Bill Fields and firefighters Pat Toole, Ron Davis and Stephen Thompson received the Citizen's Distinguished Service Award from the Columbus Division of Fire.

They were honored for their life-saving efforts at an automobile accident on April 18, 2009, on North High Street, north of Lazelle Road.

Worthington crews responded along with Columbus crews after the head-on collision left many victims trapped with life-threatening injuries. The victim freed by Worthington firefighters was flown by helicopter to a local hospital and survived, according to Worthington Fire Chief Scott Highley.

He said the four men were pleased with the award, but did not understand what the fuss was about.

"It is what they do day in and day out," he said. "It just shows what kind of people we have and the commitment they have to the community."
