Worthington administrator Trent Bowers is among six candidates who will be interviewed to succeed Melissa Conrath as superintendent of schools.

Three superintendents in Ohio, a superintendent in Wisconsin, and an administrator with the Columbus City Schools also are on the short list.

The Worthington Board of Education narrowed its list during the April 25 meeting. The district had received a list of 19 candidates from the consultants assisting in the search. The consultants have been instructed by the board to continue to directly recruit candidates, board president Marc Schare said.

Interviews will occur May 2, 3 and 5, and then the board will choose candidates to move on to a second round of interviews.

Board members hope to make a decision by the end of the school year.

Conrath officially retires in October. She has been with the district for five years.

Besides Bowers, the six candidates to be interviewed are Michele Evans, Joyce Hackett, Blane McCann, Todd Nichols and Lisa Wendell.

Bowers listed his current position as assistant superintendent-coordinator of human resources. This school year, he has been filling in following the mid-year resignation of Jeanne Paliotto, director of personnel. He also was being groomed to take over for assistant superintendent Mark Glasbrenner, who is retiring.

Bowers worked for Worthington from 1997 to 2001 as a teacher at Evening Street Elementary School and dean at McCord Middle School.

From 2001 to 2008, he was an administrator with the schools in Marysville, returning to Worthington in August 2008. His salary is $116,975.

Evans is superintendent of Canton City Schools, a position she has held since 2007. She also has worked for the Ohio Department of Education, Hilliard City Schools and Columbus City Schools. Her salary is $130,000.

Hackett is director of curriculum-intervention programs for Columbus City Schools, where she has worked since 1990. Her salary is $116,942.

McCann is superintendent of schools in Shorewood, Wis., where he has held the position since 2003. His salary is $152,500.

Nichols has been superintendent of Bucyrus City Schools since 2007. His salary is $115,000.

Wendell is superintendent of Mississinawa Valley Local Schools in Union City. Her salary is $94,700.

Other candidates who were not chosen for interviews include Walter Calinger, superintendent, Woodland Hills Schools, Pittsburgh; Steve Castle, former superintendent, New Albany-Plain Local Schools; Craig Fiegel, superintendent, Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, Plymouth, Mich.; I.V. Foster, superintendent, Prairie-Hills School District, Markham, Ill.; Thomas Gay, president, The Quality Schools Group, Lapeer, Mich.; Scott Hartley, superintendent, North Fork Local Schools, Utica; and Tod Hug, superintendent, Ayersville Local Schools, Defiance.
