After falling one match short of qualifying for the Division I state tournament last season, Rohan Gupta of the Worthington Kilbourne High School boys tennis team earned one final chance to accomplish that feat.

The senior qualified for the district tournament Friday, May 22, at Hilliard Davidson and Saturday, May 23, at Upper Arlington. The top four finishers in singles and doubles advance to state May 29 and 30 at Ohio State.

Gupta, who last season became Kilbourne's first sectional champion since Kevin Metka in 2010, repeated as sectional champion by going 5-0 May 14 and 16 at Pickerington Central.

The top four finishers in singles and doubles qualified for district.

"Rohan always seems to play his best tennis in the sectional," coach Steve Metzmaier said. "It was good enough to win soundly in the sectional, but he's got to raise his level of play to get to state."

Gupta, the top seed in his sectional, didn't surrender a game against his first three opponents, beating Olentangy's Ganesh Yeluguri, Pickerington Central's Jackson Mathias and Grove City's Brandon Kennedy all by a 6-0, 6-0 score. The win over Kennedy came in a district-qualifying match.

Gupta then beat fourth-seeded Arun Esakkirajmohan of Olentangy 6-3, 6-2 in a semifinal before defeating second-seeded Ryan Worthen of Dublin Jerome 6-2, 6-2 in the final.

Gupta is Kilbourne's lone district qualifier. Senior Steven Borchers and junior Dhruv Taneja fell one win shy of advancing in doubles. Seeded fourth, the duo beat Pickerington Central's Richie Seibert and Anthony D'Innocenzo 6-3, 6-3 and Teays Valley's Mac McCallister and Zach Engel 6-0, 6-0 in the first two rounds before losing to Jerome's Michael Lin and Jason Liu 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in a district-qualifying match.

Seeded third in doubles, George Liu and Eric Wang beat Watkins Memorial's Braden Clear and Zach Greenlee 6-0, 6-0 in the first round before losing to Jerome's Asish Katta and Noah Schneider 7-4, 6-3 in the second round.

In first-round singles matches, Kyle Huffman lost to Newark's Collin Brown 6-1, 6-1 and Daniel Stocia lost to Pickerington Central's Jacob Adams 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.

In doubles, both of the Cardinals' entries had a first-round bye and lost in the second round.
