Sophomore Spencer Kiehl set a single-season record for strikeouts for the Thomas Worthington High School baseball team during a 9-0 win over Newark on May 11 in the second round of the Division I district tournament.

Kiehl struck out 12 and tossed a one-hitter against the 24th-seeded Wildcats. That raised his season strikeout total to 68, breaking the previous record of 66 set by Nick Pauley in 2013.

"I felt my fastball was pretty strong, but my curve is still my out pitch," said Kiehl, who finished the game with a strikeout. "I got ahead of most of the hitters and we knew they were an aggressive hitting team. Things worked out well.

"To get the record means a lot because this is a good (program) and we've had many good pitchers come through here."

The Cardinals are seeded sixth and will play 10th-seeded Canal Winchester in a district semifinal May 16 at a neutral site to be determined.
