A big hole in the Scioto View shopping center is about to be filled.
Passport 196 will take over the space previously occupied by the Big Fat Greek Kuzina, 2816 Fishinger Road in Upper Arlington. The Greek restaurant closed two years ago.
A late-April opening is planned for the new restaurant, co-owner and chef Troy Bellot said. The other co-owner is John Hudson.
Bellot said Passport 196 will occupy most of the space except for a small portion that Big Fat Greek Kuzina had used as a carryout.
Bellot previously owned Passport Cafe & Catering, a small casual restaurant at 1335 Dublin Road. He said he closed the store late last year to focus on his new venture. The menu intentionally was diverse, with strong Jamaican and Indian influences.
He said he would continue to focus on world flavors with many dishes, such as the jerk duck poutine and conch fritters.
“It’s out there,” he said. “It’s a different kind of menu.”
A little more than a year ago, Bellot had planned to open a restaurant in the KiKyo Sushi + Seafood Bistro space at nearby 3706 Riverside Drive, but the deal never materialized, he said. (KiKyo remains in business.)
John Blakely, owner of the Daily Growler in Scioto View, called the development “exciting news.”
The Daily Growler, a taproom, has no kitchen, so it allows customers to bring in their own food.
“When (Big Fat Greek Kuzina) left a while ago, we definitely noticed a downtick of customers,” Blakely said. “It’s exciting we’re getting a new restaurant.”
