The South-Western City Schools Educational Foundation is inviting people to dress in black and white to help raise some green in support of its scholarship and grant programs.

The foundation will hold its annual dinner/auction on April 20 at the Pinnacle Golf Club, 1500 Pinnacle Club Drive in Grove City. The event will begin with a social hour at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m.

Keynote speaker will be Michael Curtin, former associate publisher of The Columbus Dispatch and representative of the 17th District in the Ohio House of Representatives.

"We always try to come up with a fun theme for each year's dinner," said Shadia Jallaq, a foundation trustee and chairwoman of this year's event.

"This year, we're inviting people to come up with creative outfits that use the colors of black and white," she said. "With Michael Curtin's background in journalism, we were thinking of the old joke 'what's black and white and read all over.' "

The annual dinner serves as the foundation's largest fundraiser, Jallaq said.

The foundation also holds an annual golf outing each June.

"We get great support from the community and that allows us to advance our mission of funding innovative teaching projects each fall and providing scholarships to accomplished students each spring," Jallaq said.

Last fall, the foundation awarded 30 grants totaling more than $22,000 to teachers throughout the district and across all grade levels, she said.

The foundation awarded about $64,000 in scholarships last spring to graduating seniors, said Kacie Waugh, chairwoman of the silent auction.

The silent auction focuses on offering family-oriented experiences rather than objects as bid items, Waugh said.

"We'll have things like Columbus Zoo memberships, Ohio State football tickets, a private tour of the Ohio Village and private art classes," she said.

Anyone interested in donating toward the auction can contact Waugh at 614-875-4895.

Event tickets cost $75 per person. Tables of eight are $600.

More information, registration and online payment is available at swcsef.org. The registration deadline is April 17.
