Delaware City Council has begun accepting applications from residents of the city's 3rd Ward for a vacant seat on council.

The application form is available at The candidate selected by City Council will serve until the next municipal election Nov. 7.

The seat opened March 19 when longtime Councilman Joe DiGenova died. A week before his death, DiGenova had announced his intent to resign from council by the end of April.

According to a news release from the city, City Council will show preference to candidates who complete a petition form with signatures from 25 fellow 3rd Ward residents and "express an interest" in running in November for the right to serve out the remainder of the term, which expires in November 2019.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old.

The city will accept applications until 5 p.m. April 21. City Council will interview applicants at a public meeting May 1 at Delaware City Hall.
