A Dublin police officer on patrol thwarted a theft in progress April 11.

According to Dublin Police Department incident reports, the officer was in the 7100 block of Hospital Drive when he saw a man leaving a business through entry rather than exit doors with items in a cart that weren't in plastic bags typically used after items have been purchased.

The 23-year-old Washington Township resident first told police he paid for the groceries and was waiting on a friend still inside the store. Later he admitted to stealing the items, which totaled $134.85.

While putting handcuffs on the suspect, police found 1.18 grams of marijuana in his pockets.

Representatives of the business told police they would pursue theft charges against the man, who also had outstanding warrants for theft filed by the Columbus Division of Police.

The man was charged with theft and marijuana possession in connection with the incident in Dublin.
