To the Editor:

I am writing regarding the upcoming election for the District 2 seat on the Clintonville Area Commission.

I have been a resident of District 2 for more than 20 years. Like many residents of Clintonville, I have been disquieted by the growing push to construct large developments in our community. Most disturbing are two complexes being built or planned for sites along Indianola Avenue. And although it was withdrawn, the five-story structure that was proposed for North Broadway and High presages efforts to construct similarly large developments along High Street.

If realized, such projects could turn our main thoroughfares into walls that loom over the surrounding historic community and bring thousands of additional automobiles into our narrow streets.

A further concern is that such development would almost certainly entail the loss of much of our architectural heritage, including many buildings on High that are approaching their centennials along with the cherished businesses they house (Nancy's, Longview Barber Shop, etc.).

If like me, the residents of District 2 care about the scale of new development along our stretch of High Street, and the impact of such development on our historical buildings, traffic and the general livability and aesthetic appeal of our community, I urge them to take the time to research the positions of the candidates on these issues and vote in the upcoming election. Voting takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at the Whetstone branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library, 3909 N. High St. Bring a photo ID or a utility bill with your current address.
