Members of East Columbus Church of Christ in Christian Union will honor their longtime minister, the Rev. Raymond McDaniel Jr., with a weekend of events June 3-4.

An open house is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 3, at the church, 6926 Tussing Road, Reynoldsburg. A special service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, June 4.

"Anyone who has shared in his ministry is invited," said Cheryl Isaacs, a member of the church and one of McDaniel's children. She said cards for her father may be sent to the church.

McDaniel has spent 50 of his 66 years in the ministry at East Columbus CCCU -- something his wife, Shirley, said he didn't intend to do when first hired.

"When we started out at the church, he was only going to pastor for a year," she said. "He was told every evangelist should pastor a church for at least a year. Now it is 50 years later. I guess it was his calling to be pastor of that church,"

The McDaniels also are the parents of Scott McDaniel and Robin Smith; they have four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Isaacs said the open house will feature a slide presentation about the church's history and her father's service.

"On Sunday, some denominational leaders are coming in to recognize Dad's accomplishment," she said.
