Book lovers understand books are not just for reading; they are for sharing and discussing.
Once they finish a book, readers can spend endless hours talking about it, whether discussion turns to the unexpected plot developments of a hard-boiled mystery, the intricacies of the main character's journey in a coming-of-age tale or the life lessons of a memoir.
Beginning this week, Southwest Public Libraries will again offer patrons the opportunity to read, share and discuss books with fellow book fans at both branches.
The New Horizons Book Group will hold its inaugural meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 22, at Grove City Library. The branch hosted an adult book club in the past, but it has been inactive for the past few years. The Reference Department resurrected it after repeated requests from the public.
New Horizons will continue to meet on the fourth Thursday of the month in the second-floor boardroom of Grove City Library.
Westland Area Library's adult book club, Let's Talk About ..., gathers at 6:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month in the large meeting room and it has met for several years.
As with the members of Let's Talk About ..., patrons who join New Horizons Book Group can expect to explore new literary genres and mix fiction and nonfiction works throughout the year. Instead of just selecting the most recent bestsellers, the club will identify and choose different and sometimes unexpected titles intended to inspire good conversation among its members.
Some of the genres will be magical realism, mysteries, memoirs and graphic novels.
Meetings will feature informal, roundtable discussions about the books the group will read, each meeting covering a different title. Topics will include the book's plot and characters, favorite lines and the author's writing style.
The conversation is intended to be lively and engaging, a place where participants can discover new favorites and share their love of books with fellow readers.
The inaugural session will be an informal meet and greet for patrons interested in joining. On July 27, the club plans to discuss "Faithful" by Alice Hoffman, and on Aug. 24, members will focus on "The Hearts of Men" by Nikolas Butler.
The next titles of Let's Talk About ... will be "The Whistler" by John Grisham on July 13 and "The Hike" by Drew Magary on Aug. 10.
For both Grove City and Westland book groups, patrons should read the selected book prior to the meetings to be prepared for discussion.
