Olentangy Berlin High School will be the home of the Bears.
The Olentangy Local School District announced Tuesday, Aug. 22, that Bears had prevailed over nine other finalists to become the team name and mascot for the new high school, which is set to open for the 2018-19 school year. The school's colors will be blue and light blue.
Berlin Principal Todd Spinner said the nickname pays homage to local history. Berlin Township School, which opened in 1915 and closed in 1973, also used the moniker.
Spinner said the district sought feedback from parents and students about the mascot and colors. He said future Berlin students loved the distinctive combination of blue and light blue.
"It's unique and it pops," he said. "We were cognizant of the (Olentangy) middle schools' colors, and none of them are blue and light blue."
Spinner said the district has not finalized the logo for the high school, but unveiled a "rough draft" during the meeting.
He said a design contest likely would be held among students to choose an emblem to be painted inside the high school building. A private firm will design the logo used on sports uniforms, T-shirts and other items.
