Up to 100 people are expected to take part in the first Running Scared 5K Oct. 21 at Canal Winchester's Hanners Park, 458 Gender Road.

The inaugural event is sponsored by the Canal Winchester Area Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with Diley Ridge Medical Center. The race starts at 10 a.m.

"What we're really hoping for is a fun community event that people of all ages can participate in," chamber Vice President Denise Mathias said. "But really, we just wanted to embrace the October season and give everybody a chance to be silly."

Runners and walkers of all ages are invited. Costumes are optional but encouraged, Mathias said, with a prize to be awarded for the best-dressed participant.

Participants can register at runningscared5K.com for $40 prior to 9 a.m. the day of the race. The registration fee is $45 the day of the race. Proceeds will benefit the chamber, a nonprofit organization.

"We do a golf outing in the summer and awards dinner, and we're looking to bring a job fair in the spring 2018 to the city, so some of the money raised will enable us to advertise that and bring future employees to the city," Mathias said.

The event is expected to draw 80 to 100 runners, she said.

"We know it will take some time to grow this event and gain in popularity," Mathias said. "We're trying to raise money and have some fun along the way."
