More than 25,000 runners and walkers are expected to participate in the 26th annual Komen Columbus Race for the Cure, slated for May 19 in downtown Columbus.

The 5K walk and run will start at 9:45 a.m. at Front and Gay streets. A 1-mile family fun walk will begin at 10 a.m. at the same location.

"We are really excited for 25,000 participants to show up on race day to show their support for people fighting this disease," race director Kaki Scala said.

A few changes are in store this year, Scala said.

The event's Expo and SurvivorPalooza will open at 8 a.m. on East Broad Street between High and Third streets.

The expo will have a new children's area, with COSI supplying interactive gadgets and Legoland Discovery Center in Easton Town Center bringing loads of its iconic plastic bricks.

The Wall of Remembrance, which includes pictures of those who have died from cancer and is updated each year, will be displayed at the event along with Catriona's Garden, named after Catriona Martin, who recently died from breast cancer. Patrons will be able to write the name of a loved one who succumbed to cancer on a paper flower and post it to the memorial.

The Survivor Ceremony, featuring the more than 1,500 breast-cancer survivors, will start at 9 a.m. on the south side of Columbus City Hall, 90 W. Broad St.

It will feature honorary race chairwoman and metastatic breast-cancer survivor Liz Miesen and Julia Cygan, daughter of the late WBNS-10TV anchor Heather Pick.

The central Ohio event is the largest of all affiliates of Susan G. Komen, which is headquartered in Dallas.

It is expected to raise $2 million for Susan G. Komen Columbus, said Becca Thomas, a spokeswoman for the local chapter.

"And that will help us provide funding for community programs, including mammography (screening), treatment and educational services," Thomas said. "We also fund global scientific research so we can save more women's lives in our community."

Cost to participate in the 5K is $40 in advance and $45 the day of the race. Registration is available at

Race-day registration and packet pickup will be from 7 to 9 a.m. in the lobby of the Vern Riffe Center, 77 S. High St.

Race participants also can pick up their T-shirts and packets from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 15 to 17 at Komen Columbus headquarters, 929 Eastwind Drive, Suite 211, in Westerville..

Virtual participation also is possible, meaning people can financially support the race without attending, but still receive a T-shirt.
