On March 12, 2017, our brother, David "Beau" Schoener, passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack at his home. He was 39 years old.
Beau was an outstanding firefighter and paramedic. Many firefighters in the Plain Township Fire Department had the privilege of serving alongside Beau since 2003. Throughout his career, Beau was recognized multiple times for his valor. He also selflessly served in the Hurricane Katrina rescue efforts.
Beau was dedicated to his family, his friends and his beloved Chelsea, and he considered his 9-year-old son, Jake, his greatest gift and best accomplishment.
Last year, Plain Township firefighters held our inaugural golf outing fundraiser to raise money for Jake. This launched a larger goal to ensure not only a bright future for Jake, but also to build a legacy for Beau to touch the lives of many fire families.
Thanks to a very gracious community, we were able to raise more than $45,000 in the first year. This tremendous volume of support helped us to create the Plain Township New Albany Firefighters Foundation.
This nonprofit organization will allow us to continue helping Jake for many years to come and also will serve as a vehicle to support other fire families in need.
Additionally, we are establishing a scholarship for students interested in pursuing a career as a firefighter.
Just as Beau gave selflessly to so many, the Plain Township New Albany Firefighters Foundation aims to follow his lead.
On June 2, we will hold our second annual Beau Schoener Memorial Golf Outing.
We love you and miss you, Beau. We think about you everyday. We are working hard to honor your memory.
