To the Editor:

I applaud Worthington City Council for proposing to send a letter to Worthington's state representative and senator encouraging them to enact some common-sense gun reforms.

Their proposed letter is thoughtful and respectful of the Second Amendment rights, yet also expresses the desires of many of our residents for gun-safety measures to be enacted. I believe both goals can be achieved, as the letter illustrates.

I further applaud the council's request that if the legislature chooses to ignore such requests, and the support of its constituents for the measures outlined, that provisions be restored under home rule to enable cities to enact their own common-sense gun-safety measures.

I thank them for considering, discussing and acting on this timely issue. Sadly, the consequences of inaction can be tragic, as Gov. John Kasich has pointed out.
