The Cambridge Lions Club recently recognized four area athletes for their All Ohio Athlete achievements.

Cambridge High School athlete Joseph Clifford said it was an honor to participate at the state level and to see others who were highly motivated and who worked hard.

Buckeye Trail athlete Emily Paden said it was a great experience to compete in the state track meet and to hear so many people cheering. She was a four-time champion at the OVAC meets where she set the record of 12-1 in the pole vault, and also advanced to the state track meet all four years. Paden earned all-Ohio honors for the third year in a row in the girls’ D-III pole vault, finishing fourth (11-4). Paden was third as a sophomore (12-0) and sixth as a junior (11-2) in the state meet.

"When I was in seventh grade the coaches made us try out for every track event," Paden said. "I went home and said I never wanted to do that again. I was a gymnast. My coach said that I had real potential in the pole vault so I tried it again and got pretty good at it."

Cambridge High School athlete Lilly Ritz and John Glenn High School athlete Karlie Zumbro were unable to attend the meeting because of previous commitments.

Lion Charlie Fondale said that Ritz has been an all-Ohio athlete for four years. She placed second in high jump last year and fifth this year. Fondale praised the athletes for their years of hard work. He praised the parents and coaches for their support of their athletes.

John Glenn assistant coach D. Todt said Karlie Zumbro helped the track team win at the MVL meets. At one meet she ran the 300 hurdles, one of the toughest races, then ran the half-mile where she came in second.

At the state meet she placed fifth in the 100 hurdles, third in the 300 hurdles, and sixth in the long jump. Todt said she will be legendary at John Glenn, saying she is dedicated, hard working and focused.

In other club business Brad Richert updated the club on preparations for the Ruff Truk contest at the fairgrounds.

The Cambridge Lions Club meets every Monday at noon at Mr. Lee’s Banquet Room.
