The Olentangy Local School District wants some input on its 2019 academic calendar.

The proposed 2019-20 calendar was released June 25. It will be posted on the district website,, for about a month to solicit feedback from parents.

District officials spent months working on a proposed calendar, using important dates such as graduation, holidays and state-testing dates as "anchors," said Randy Wright, chief of administrative services.

The district has a five-year contract to hold its graduation ceremonies at the Jerome Schottenstein Center in Columbus.

That means students will graduate on the third Sunday in May through 2022, Wright said.

Among the proposed changes in the calendar is a different starting date. Beginning the school year Aug. 15, 2019 -- a Thursday -- would allow teachers an extra work day before students return.

Wright said the first two days of the year are largely administrative -- distributing textbooks and holding assemblies.

"We spent a lot of time talking about principals and teachers about what those first two days look like with students," Wright said. "Coming back that following Monday, we hit normal school as we know it for the coming semester."

This year, parents will be able to give feedback on the calendar and rate the responses of others with a star rating of one to five, signifying their level of agreement with the statement.

"We're very excited to be starting a partnership with a new software group," Wright said.

"All of the thoughts -- as many as you like -- you can also star, and the metrics behind it will connect thoughts and develop themes."

The school board is expected to vote on the 2019-20 calendar in August.
