On July 5, an officer reported seeing fireworks illuminating the sky at 11:45 p.m. behind Taylor Road Elementary School, 8200 Taylor Road SW, and caught a man lighting the wick of a firework while a juvenile boy held a flashlight nearby. The officer said a juvenile girl was watching, and a woman and two other juveniles were sitting on the trunk of a car in the school parking lot.
The man told the officer he thought it would be safer to set off the fireworks in an open field behind the school than at his residence. The officer advised him that fireworks may be legal to purchase in Ohio but must be taken out of state within 48 hours.
He gave the man a warning and seized 20 to 25 large fireworks, including bottle rockets, one called the Red, White & Blue Salute, a 90-shot Gatling cannon, several Roman candles and a 61-shot Whistle Whirl Comet.
Other warnings for discharging fireworks were given to residents between 10:57 and 11:57 p.m. July 5 in the 800 block of Sunview Road; Taylor Woods Drive; Rodebaugh Park, 7200 Rodebaugh Road, and in the 7300 block of Warwick Drive.
