The Worthington Division of Police has identified a man found dead in his vehicle in a Worthington mall parking lot earlier this month.
Sgt. Jim Moran said the man in the vehicle was Joel R. Eger, a 25-year-old whose last listed residence was in Mogadore, a village in northeast Ohio. On the evening of July 5, a passerby discovered Eger's body in a parked car in a parking lot outside the Shops at Worthington Place, 7227 N. High St.
At the time, police said the body had "possibly been there for a period of several days" and was not immediately identifiable.
Investigators do not suspect foul play, and they found paraphernalia "consistent with drug use" in the vehicle, Moran said.
He said he could not speculate on the type of drugs involved and investigators are awaiting toxicology reports and analysis of the paraphernalia.
However, the case is being treated as an overdose, he said, and investigators will use strategies from the Franklin County Heroin Overdose Prevention and Education Task Force.
Moran said those tests still could take "weeks" before they're completed.
In the meantime, he said, investigators are learning all they can about Eger.
"We're following up with family and acquaintances and just trying to establish some recent history," he said. "Then we just kind of wait for the coroner's report and go from there."
