The 16,000-square-foot open-air Center Street Market anchored by a brewery could be open by summer 2019 in Old Hilliard.

Construction is expected to begin by the end of the year for Crooked Can Brewing Co. at the corner of Center and Wayne streets in Old Hilliard, according to Jon St. Julian, one of three partners in the project.

The original Crooked Can Brewing Co. is based in Winter Garden, Fla., near Orlando.

Anchored by the enclosed brewing company, which will include a tap room, Center Street Market will have 10 full-time vendors and additional part-time vendors, St. Julian said.

They will include local artisans and locally sourced food options, St. Julian said.

"No national brands," he said.

Though Hilliard Planning and Zoning Commission members Sept. 13 raised some concerns about parking -- it will have no on-site parking -- they approved the proposal 7-0.

"I'm excited about this concept, (but) it will create more parking challenges," said commission member Bill Uttley.

Commission member Jay Muether also inquired about the architecture and whether more natural materials could be used in its construction.

But Mayor Don Schonhardt, who is a member of the commission, said the development fits in the Old Hilliard district and will further enhance it.

"This is the kind of new commercial development we want in Old Hilliard," Schonhardt said.

The proposed structure is similar to other older-style structures in the immediate area such as the Early Television Museum and Ketchum's Garage, an automobile service-and-repair shop, Schonhardt said.

Apart from public parking lots already in the area, Schonhardt said the city's long-term plans include improvements on Center Street, north of Wayne Street that would add parking and a possible connection to Leppert Road.

Robert Fry of Plain City, Andrew Sheeter of Orlando and St. Julian of Hilliard formed a limited-liability company, CCB Columbus, to develop Center Street Market.

It will be built on the former site of the NAPA Auto Parts Store at 5354 Center St.
