It's a driving range with a bar. Or maybe it's a restaurant with a driving range.

Either way, it's a happy marriage.

Topgolf, at 2000 Ikea Way in Columbus near Ikea and Polaris Fashion Place, is the second Ohio location for the high-tech, golf-centered entertainment facility. It is set to open Friday, Oct. 19.

"I can't go anywhere with the logo on," said Ann Murrell, marketing manager for Topgolf. "People ask me all about it."

It's no wonder why.

For the past year, the attraction has risen above the former site of Germain Amphitheater. Dozens of giant poles, which hold the netting for the three-story driving range, are visible for miles.

This is not your father's driving range.

Topgolf features 102 sleek, heated outdoor bays where guests play a game with up to six players, aiming for various targets. Clubs are provided at the bays, and balls are summoned by swiping the club at a sensor.

Guests use microchipped balls that instantly score themselves, showing players the accuracy and distance of their shots on a television screen in their hitting bay.

Weather is not an issue, although most of the facility is at least partially outdoors.

"Yes, we are open year-round," Murrell said.

Come early if you want to play on the third floor, which Topgolf officials say is by far the most popular spot. The first floor is level with the range, so the second and third floors provide a better view, although, Murrell said, the first floor is more kid-friendly and includes child-size golf clubs.

For those not playing golf, the venue includes 65,000 square feet of meeting areas, bars with televisions on each floor, couches and tables. Food and drink are available throughout.

The Polaris location has a few unique features, such as a large, third-floor meeting space called the Chairman's Suite that can be rented out by groups.

Topgolf has hired about 500 people to staff the Polaris location, its 49th site and second in Ohio after a location in West Chester near Cincinnati. A Cleveland location is expected next year.

Murrell, a central Ohio native, discovered Topgolf at West Chester.

"I fell in love with it," she said.

Topgolf's hours will be 9 a.m. to midnight Sundays through Thursdays and 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
