The Jewish Community Center of Greater Columbus recently announced its executive director, Carol Folkerth, will retire next summer.

Folkerth, who has held the position since 2006, will retire effective June 30.

During her tenure, the JCC, at 1125 College Ave. in Berwick, was expanded and its fitness center and gym were renovated; the early-childhood education program grew by two new preschools; and a yearlong celebration of the group's 100-year anniversary was held.

Before becoming executive director, Folkerth served as the center's associate executive director for 15 years and before that as its adult services director. She has worked at the JCC in Columbus since 1984.

"Our JCC is in an extraordinarily positive position with award-winning programs that are valued by our members and the community," Folkerth said in a written statement. "It is strong financially and in volunteer and professional leadership. This makes it a good time for change."

There will be a search for the next director, though the details are not finalized, said Mike Levison, the center's marketing director.
