Worthington's Good Neighbor Award program highlights everyday heroes in the community, and city leaders are looking for more residents to honor for 2018.

The program was established in 1993 by the Worthington Community Relations Commission as a way to thank community members who promote goodwill.

"It's meant to have some acknowledgement and recognition for those folks," said Lori Trego, personnel director and assistant to the city manager.

Trego said nominations open every October and are accepted until Dec. 31. She said the commission reviews all of the nominations and then takes a vote on winners.

"Sometimes it's one person; sometimes it's multiple people," Trego said.

Worthington resident Susan Hinz said she nominated her neighbors, Bob and Jan Davis, for the 2017 award after Hinz and her husband, Chris, moved into the house next door in 2014. City leaders chose the Davises for the award.

"I just felt like they deserved it," Hinz said.

Hinz said the Davises were welcoming and introduced them to all of their neighbors in Colonial Hills right after they moved in.

She said the couple are very involved in the community, too: Bob Davis, 80, serves lunch to children at Colonial Hills Elementary School, is involved with Gethsemane Lutheran Church and works with Habitat for Humanity, and Jan Davis, 77, sews quilts for ill members of the church and helps with funeral luncheons.

"She's always very friendly and always willing to say hi," Hinz said of Jan Davis.

Trego said Good Neighbor Award winners are recognized at a Worthington City Council meeting through a resolution.

"I think we're lucky in the Worthington community there's so many people in our neighborhoods that do so many nice things," she said.

Residents who want to submit a nomination can pick up a form at the Worthington Municipal Building, 6550 High St., or download it from the city's website, worthington.org.

Trego said a nominee has to be a Worthington resident, but the nominator does not.

Completed forms can be sent by mail to Trego at the municipal building or by email to trego@ci.worthington.oh.us
