The Whitehall Division of Fire, in cooperation with the American Red Cross, will canvass select streets in Whitehall from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, as a public-awareness campaign for the use of smoke detectors.

Firefighters will go door to door on Erickson Avenue, Pierce Avenue, Elaine Road and Westphal Avenue from Etna Road south to East Main Street.

"It's the first time, but we plan to do it again once next spring and again next fall, twice a year," until the entire city has been canvassed, said Whitehall Lt. Garry Keiffer, the division's fire inspector.

Firefighters will check batteries and function of any existing smoke detectors at residences and provide batteries or smoke detectors as needed, Keiffer said.

"It's a good program," said Keiffer, adding the department has as many smoke detectors as needed to provide to any residents who want them.
