Police are investigating a fight among high school students after school hours outside Wickliffe Progressive School, 2405 Wickliffe Road, that allegedly involved a dispute over money.

According to a Dec. 7 press release, the fight took place Nov. 30 and was reported by the parents of one of the Upper Arlington High School students involved. The UAPD release said three students involved in the fight initially were referred to the city's juvenile diversion Program.

A video of the incident was shared with police Dec. 6, and the division became aware of a previous altercation in the UAHS cafeteria Nov. 28, which prompted the suspension of the students' participation in the Juvenile Diversion Program and the launch of a police investigation.

"The video has also been shared publicly via social media, with various commenters speculating about what transpired and the nature of the incident," the UAPD release stated. "Since one of the students involved in the incident is Asian, community members are expressing concern that the altercation may have been racially motivated.

"Currently, the evidence does not support that the altercation was racially motivated, however the police plan to continue their investigation into this matter."

Police said the investigation is in its "beginning stages" and the press release asked the community to "allow detectives to complete their work to gain a full understanding of the events and determine an appropriate course of action."

Contrary to information on social media, officer Bryan McKean said, none of the students were hospitalized following the fights.

Anyone with information that may assist in the investigation is asked to call the Police Division at 614-583-5410.
