This undated photograph shows Grandview Heights High School Principal Ralph D. Beery in unusual and comic circumstances.

The costume -- likely worn for a skit -- was out of character for the austere and conservative principal (inset).

Beery held degrees from Ohio University and Ohio State University and started his career as a math and science teacher in 1935.

Born in Union Furnace, he served as a lieutenant in the Navy during WWII.

He taught at Grandview Heights High School until he was appointed principal in 1948 and served in that position until 1971.

Beery was nationally known in his professional field of academic administrators and is the longest-serving principal at the school.

He remained active in the community and at First Community Church until his death in 1997 at age 89.
