Swensons Drive-In continues to make in-roads in central Ohio.
The Northland Community Council development committee approved variances March 27 for construction of a fourth central Ohio Swensons, this one at 5720 N. Hamilton Road, but not before bringing up concerns from neighbors about noise pollution and nose pollution.
“I don’t think they necessarily objected to this as a hamburger joint ... although one woman said she didn’t want a lot of smells,” committee Chairman Dave Paul said.
With no indoor tables and no outdoor seating, the drive-in isn’t an eating establishment under Columbus city code, according to attorney David Hodge, who also represented Swensons at the development committee hearing.
Swensons relies on curb servers taking orders and delivering food to drivers who eat in their vehicles or take it home.
“That’s part of our special experience,” Dee said. “It’s a kitchen. It’s simply a kitchen with some 1950s architecture wrapped around it.”
The other three Swensons in central Ohio are on Ikea Way east of Polaris Fashion Place in Columbus, Sawmill Road in northwest Columbus and Cemetery Road in Hilliard. The latter is approved, but has not been constructed.
