Swensons Drive-In soon could be pulling into Reynoldsburg.
Difficulty with the Akron-based burger chain's location in Hilliard opened the door, according to city officials.
Swensons has all its Hilliard approvals and is set to open at 4810 Cemetery Road later this year, but its plan was rejected last year by the Hilliard Planning and Zoning Commission.
After the company had difficulty in Hilliard, Reynoldsburg officials reached out, said Andrew Bowsher, Reynoldsburg’s director of development.
“We are working with them to find a specific location in the city,” Bowsher said Monday, April 1. “We have established a good relationship with their real-estate team and we are hoping to have more information in the near future.”
Potential sites include commercially zoned areas along state Route 256 and East Main Street, he said.
Any potential development would require a site-plan review through the Reynoldsburg Planning Commission, Bowsher said.
Ron Dee, vice president of real estate for Swensons, declined to name specific locations under consideration but said the company is “continuing to look for additional sites in the Columbus market.”
Swensons, whose signature burger is the Galley Boy, does not have indoor or outdoor seating. Orders are delivered to vehicles to be consumed there or taken to go.
The chain opened its first central Ohio location in 2018 on Sawmill Road in north Columbus, just outside Dublin. A second location opened Feb. 4 near Polaris Fashion Place in northeast Columbus. The Swensons in Hilliard has been approved but not yet built and the Northland Community Council development committee approved variances March 27 for construction of what would be the fourth central Ohio Swensons, this one at 5720 N. Hamilton Road in Columbus, just outside Gahanna.
