Barrel & Boar BBQ Gastropub continues its expansion outside Interstate 270.

The locally based restaurant group plans a summer opening for its Canal Winchester store, which will take over the former Village Wines and Bistro location, 10 S. High St.

“As I continue to build the brand, I’m looking for opportunities in smaller communities,” said Stan Riley, founder of Barrel & Boar. “I want to be part of the fabric of those communities.”

Barrel & Boar specializes in house-smoked Ohio meats; upscale entrees, such as shrimp and grits and salmon cakes; burgers; signature sandwiches, including the brisket Cuban; and classic sides and desserts.

With a full liquor license, Barrel & Boar will serve signature cocktails and Ohio craft beers, Riley said.

Riley calls the concept “polished casual.”

He said the Canal Winchester menu would mirror the full-service stores in Gahanna, Westerville and Newark, with some variations.

“I do tend to tailor the menus (at specific stores) because there are other competitors there,” he said.

The 4,900-square-foot space will seat 200.

Riley, a 25-year veteran of the local barbecue industry, founded his first store, Holy Smoke BBQ, 12 years ago in the North Market. Two years later, he rebranded the concept as Barrel & Boar, but in the North Market it’s called Market & Boar because of a naming conflict with another tenant.
